Known rugs

Here, a “rug” simply means a fake job offer. Learn the common structures behind them so you can recognize the pressure tactics before money or personal data changes hands.

Fake check / equipment scam

A fake employer sends a check and tells you to buy a laptop or software from an approved vendor. The check later bounces, while the money you sent is gone.

How to spot it

  • A check arrives before you start
  • A specific equipment vendor
  • Pressure to deposit quickly

Task / ‘like and earn’ scam

You are paid a little for simple clicks, reviews, or likes. Soon, you must ‘top up’ an account to unlock tasks or withdraw invented earnings.

How to spot it

  • Commissions per task
  • Recharge or top-up requests
  • Contact through WhatsApp or Telegram

Reshipping scam

The ‘job’ asks you to receive, inspect, repackage, and forward goods. Those goods are often purchased with stolen payment details.

How to spot it

  • Packages sent to your home
  • Labels supplied by a manager
  • No normal hiring process

Upfront training fees

A supposed employer charges for training, background checks, registration, starter kits, or guaranteed placement. Legitimate employers do not charge you to hire you.

How to spot it

  • Pay before onboarding
  • Refund promised later
  • Payment by gift card or wire

Crypto ‘trading assistant’

The role may involve moving crypto, receiving transfers, or using a fake trading platform. It can turn you into a money mule or steal your deposit.

How to spot it

  • Salary or tasks paid only in USDT
  • Use your personal wallet
  • Guaranteed returns

Identity harvesting

A polished fake application collects your passport, bank details, tax number, or selfie before any genuine interview or verified offer.

How to spot it

  • Sensitive documents requested immediately
  • Forms on an unrelated domain
  • No verifiable recruiter

Verify through a separate path

Do not use links or phone numbers in the suspicious message. Find the company’s official website yourself and contact its hiring team there.
